Michael Kolbinger
(9.7.1923 - 27.5.1941) from Mettenheim
Michael Kolbinger, born in Mettenheim on 9 Juli 1923, grew up as the oldest of four siblings in his Bavarian homeland. The small town of Mettenheim near Mühldorf on the Inn had an elementary school which he attended for 7 years. After his schooling period he took up the occupation of a tailor for men in Schönberg which is in the same county.
As soon as he finished his training, his master teacher was drafted by the military. Since Michael did not wish to change over to another master, he volunteered for the navy.
He was called up, presumably in January 1941, for basic training in Stralsund. He did not have leave during his time in the navy. On 15 February 1941 he was already assigned to the Bismarck. He as able to send a postcard home from Stralsund in which he announced his transfer and the imminent sailing of the Bismarck.
These two photos Michael Kolbinger is seen in the tailor shop aboard the Bismarck. The other
shows him at an earlier age.
