We have been constructing a homepage about the battleship Bismarck since 2001. Soon thereafter we also began collecting information on individual crew members for the Portrait Project   [For details click on the links above.]

22.6.04    This Homepage is entitled: Battleship Bismarck - The True Face of a Warship - online. It presents the introduction of the project and its publication in book format.
16.6.05    The translation into English is ready.
13.8.06    We now have the portraits for over 260 of the Bismarck crew.

Ward’s interview with Bismarck survivor Machinist’s Mate Heinrich Kuhnt was published in the August 2006 issue of the US Naval Institute magazine Naval History.

In early July we accompanied Heinrich and Otto Schlenzka (a Lt on the Prinz Eugen) to a History Channel filming session in London. Dieter Heitmann, Chairman of the Bismarck association also flew over with us and was also interviewed.

The US History Channel series "Dogfights" will feature an episode on the Battle of Denmark Strait, in which Bismarck sank the Hood. Heinrich was on duty in Bismarck’s starboard turbine room at the time, and Otto was a FLAK officer on the portside upper deck of Prinz Eugen and had a ringside seat to the action. His account of the battle is extremely vivid.

Cynthia Harrison and Brooks Wachtel, the producers of the episode, met us at the hotel and supervised the interview filming the next day. We had a few pints and dinner with Royal Navy vets Ted Briggs, the last living Denmark Strait HMS Hood survivor, and Doug Turtle, King George V. Doug was on the directional tower during Bismarck’s final fight on 27 May, 1941.

Ward took over several bottles of Prinz Eugen wine and during dinner Otto, as a Prinz Eugen vet, presented Ted, Doug, Cynthia and Brooks with a bottle and left two for the Royal Navy aviators who, unfortunately, did not come till a day later so we did not get to meet them. Swordfish veteran John Moffat will be featured in the film.

All in all a very exciting couple of days in London.

Keep an eye out for the History Channel series "Dogfights" this November.
