Mein wunderbares Leben
Ein Zeitzeuge berichtet
by Herbert P. Ludwig
Herbert Ludwig volunteered for the navy in 1940 at the age of eighteen. He had previously experienced the horrors of war for the first time in the fight against Poland with the Reichsarbeitsdienst and now hoped to be deployed far away from the front in the navy. Trained as an anti-aircraft gunner, Herbert Ludwig was sent to the battleship Tirpitz. He served for three years on the huge ship, the largest and most powerful that the navy had to offer, experiencing air raids, daily drill and harassment by his superiors. The execution of a deserter comrade left a deep mark on him.
In 1943, his time on the Tirpitz ended and Herbert Ludwig joined the torpedo command in Toulon. As if by a miracle, he survived the recapture of Toulon by the French in 1944 and was then taken prisoner of war by the French, from which he was not released until 1948. His whole life was shaped by such large and small coincidences, of which Herbert Ludwig says, looking back: "Up to now, everything in my life has been so wonderful that I can say with certainty: My wonderful life!"
